Signs that Europe would decisively address its financial crisis pushed stocks higher Wednesday. European Commission President Jose-Manuel Barroso presented a plan to strengthen European banks and lower Greece's debt. It's being seen as the strongest effort yet to address the region's debt crisis.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 102.55 points, or 0.9 percent, to close at 11,518.85.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 11.71, or 1 percent, to 1,207.25.
The Nasdaq composite rose 21.70, or 0.8 percent, to 2,604.73.
For the week to date:
The Dow is up 415.73, or 3.7 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 51.79, or 4.5 percent
The Nasdaq composite is up 125.38, or 5.1 percent.
For the year to date:
The Dow is down 58.66 points, or 0.5 percent.
The S&P 500 is down 50.39, or 4 percent.
The Nasdaq is down 48.14, or 1.8 percent.
