I?ll be honest. ?As soon as I saw the title, I flipped straight to the chapter on tuna.
I love tuna. ?And I love dolphins. ?And like many people described in the chapter, I would give up tuna if it meant saving thousands of dolphins. ?This aspect of the chapter follows exactly with what I said about pandas in my last post. ?If people decide they want to save an animal, it can be saved. ?Dolphins are by far not the only animals affected by poor practices in harvesting resources, be it food, energy or other. ?If only bluefin tuna were so cute and ?friendly?, we would want to save them too.
The most interesting aspect to me about this chapter is the concept of labeling for products that are eco-friendly, sustainable, natural, organic, etc. ?For example, some people may think that dolphin-safe is equivalent to sustainable. ?It may be more sustainable for the dolphin populations, but it sure doesn?t make a difference for the struggling populations of tuna. ?Even something in the grocery store with ingredients marked as 90% natural might be made up of 9 natural ingredients, but the one non-natural ingredient makes up almost the entirety of the product. ?Labels such as this can be beneficial, but in a craze to be the most natural and eco-friendly, people rarely take the time to think about what the logo really means. ?People may feel good about buying paper where 80% of the product comes from tree farms. ?They don?t even explore long enough to find out that the other 20% comes from an extremely diminished rainforest where nearly all of the animal populations are threatened with extinction because of logging. ?It is easy for corporations to twist language to create a label that will give them an edge over their ?non-sustainable? competitors. ?All that matters to the human public is the ability to sleep at night.
Speaking of the ability to sleep at night, I have been too afraid to watch this movie, but if you?re braver than me, you now have the link.
Maybe if we start eating only animals that people think are cute and smart, the percentage of vegetarians in this country will increase dramatically. ?If we can make fish look like pandas, I bet the overfishing problem would stop.
Don?t need to save.
?
DEFINITELY NEED TO SAVE!
?
Also need to save.
Not too concerned.
