The trouble with personal development!
Article by Michael McGrath
The personal development industry is thriving and getting bigger every year. The World Wide Web has made it even easier to gain access to articles, insights and products for self improvement. Yet, by its very nature, the industry is getting bigger because a vast amount of people are becoming more dissatisfied with their lot in life! If the personal development industry was delivering on its promises then it would be dwindling in size not getting bigger because people would be living the life of their dreams full of joy and contentment.
Ok then, what is happening? We know that personal development and self improvement products work! We know that hypnosis, subliminal messages, and visualization can reprogram the subconscious mind. We know that the subconscious mind can create anything. So why aren?t the majority of people getting real tangible nuts-and-bolts results?
The one thing that is inherent with most of the products, systems and ideas is that they take responsibility away from the consumer. i.e. just listen to this tape, read this book, try this system and your life will transform magically! They fail to tell you that work is required and honest insight into your own thoughts and beliefs is neccessary before any change can happen.
Personal Development can be a tough and painful process at times. You need to confront your inner mind and strech your comfort zone in order to grow. You need to be willing to strike out and take action and you also need to be willing to strike-out (fail) before you get a break-through!
Now there are some excellent products and speakers, such as Tony Robbins who hammer home that action is needed and systems like The Sedona Method and EFT which can be used to make the transformation painless and, in fact, very enjoyable. But you still need to do some work!
It may be uncomfortable to confront your own mind to find out what beliefs you are harbouring and what thoughts & feelings you have which are holding you back in life. Without identifying your own self-imposed limitations how can you expect to over-come them? You could be given a genie in a bottle but unless you know what to ask for you will get nothing. There are products, systems and techniques that can allow you to transform your life in any and every area but first you must do the work and identify where you need to make changes in yourself! A nail is usless without a hammer!
For example listening to a hypnosis cd for unlimited financial abundance will have little effect if your core beliefs about yourself and the world reflect lack, unworthiness and dis-ease. A 20 minute hypnosis sessions isn?t going to work if you are spending 15 hours and 40 minutes thinking negatively about money.
You must first address your own inner issues. Once you have identified what is getting in your way, within yourself, then chose a product that will help you rectify it. You need to change yourself first, then the world around you chances.
So, I believe the problem with personal development is that there is not enough personal growth!
Take responsibility NOW for your life. Identify what needs changing and then change it. Make an honest introspection of your beliefs, values and thoughts and then find a product to help you change ? one bit at a time. Stop looking for quick fixes. There is labour involved but the fruit of that labour is so sweet that it makes the hard work worth it and ultimately you will be grateful for the journey.
