Second generation Razer Blade laptop sharpens its edge with GTX 660M, unannounced Core i7 CPU

Second generation Razer Blade laptop announced at PAX Prime with GTX 660M, unannounced Core i7 CPU

The 17-inch behemoths that call themselves gaming notebooks are traditionally quite large, trading extreme performance for substantial bulk. These machines routinely flirt with double digit weigh-ins, and flaunt meaty 1.5-plus inch bezels. They represent a unwieldy reality in portable power that most gamers have learned to expect. Not Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan, however -- he's still chasing the dream: thin, powerful and sleek. Tan caught up with us this week to brief us on the next generation Razer Blade, a rig that still boldly claims to be the "world's first true gaming laptop."

Razer's first laptop hit shelves earlier this year, packing a 2.8GHz Core i7-2650M CPU and a GeForce GT 555M GPU into a svelte 0.8-inch aluminum shell. Tan explained that the rig's attractive hull hadn't changed much, but its internals sure have. "The Blade was our first laptop, and we've taken feedback really seriously since then," the CEO told us. "We've been listing to gamers and made a chart of all the pros to keep, and all the cons to address. Every single one of them." That chart eventually mapped out the refreshed rig's internals, which include an unannounced Core i7 processor, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M graphics, 8GB of 1600MHz DDR3 RAM, a 500GB 7200RPM hard drive and 64GB of fast-booting solid state storage. All this comes in the same aluminum shell as the first Blade, of course, sporting a 17.3-inch high definition display and the firm's exclusive multitouch LCD Switchblade interface. Tan says the new build addresses some of our own complaints too, noting that the sticky hinge that plagued our review unit has been tweaked to bend to a lighter touch. The machine's internal speakers have been upgraded as well, and are said to be 250% louder with no distortion.

The new Blade's sharpened specs will come with a price cut, ringing in at a penny under $2,500 -- and gamers who picked up its predecessor (which will be getting its own price cut, to $2,299), we were told, can snag one for $500 less. Pre-orders are slated to start on September 2nd, and should ship within 30 days. The new laptop is being unveiled for the first time at PAX Prime this weekend. Not in Seattle for Labor Day? Check out the official press release after the break.

How The Apple Store Trains Its Geniuses To Manipulate You

People consider the Apple Store experience the gold standard--or at least the brushed aluminum standard--of electronics retail. Companies from AT&T to Microsoft have tried to replicate the Apple Store experience, then refused to admit that they were trying to replicate the Apple Store experience. The backbone of the store is the Genius Bar, where Apple cultists customers seek repairs, warranty replacements, and the wise counsel of the local council of Geniuses. What goes into the formation of a Genius? Gizmodo got hold of an Apple Store training workbook, and decided to tell the world.

The subject of most lessons? Managing people, not necessarily diagnosing iPhones. "The manual could easily serve as the Humanity 101 textbook for a robot university," writes Sam Biddle. Only robots don't need to be taught how to spread "Gadget Joy" to humans.

Like all training manuals, this material is probably read once and largely forgotten, but says a lot about how Geniuses and sales staff are to manage the expectations of customers: allowing them to feel empowered, but guiding their expectations.

Confederate flag to be taken off General Lee?

By Courtney Garcia, TODAY contributor and Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY

Update, 1 p.m. PT: This story has been updated with a new statement from Warner Bros. Consumer Products.

The 1969 Dodge Charger from ?The Dukes of Hazzard,? known to the world as the General Lee, prominently features the Confederate flag on its roof in the popular 1970s-1980s TV show. Some reports now say the flag will be removed from certain toy versions of the car, and at least one former "Dukes" cast member tells TODAY he's furious.

Everett Collection

Tom Wopat and John Schneider flew around the hills of Hazzard County in the General Lee on "The Dukes of Hazzard." Now the car's Confederate flag has become an issue.

Exactly what products might be altered isn't clear. As reported by ScreenCrush, a poster to HobbyTalk.com's message board?wrote there that he was told by a sales rep for the Tomy toy company that "starting January 1, 2013 all Dukes of Hazzard General Lee vehicles will not be allowed to be produced with the Confederate flag on the top of the vehicle. This directive has been passed onto us from the licensor Warner Brothers."

But a Warner Bros. Consumer Products spokesperson denied the report, telling TODAY on Thursday, "We were not, and are not, planning to change the design of the General Lee on merchandise. ?All reports to the contrary have been inaccurate."

Despite the denial, HobbyTalk readers?had no problem sharing?various sightings of cars without the flag. Wrote one, "Not surprising. They have been removing the image from the model boxes for years. I have one that was a giveaway from the Kansas City Royals that has the Royals logo on the trunk and no roof flag."

Another wrote, "Was at a Hobby Lobby today. In the model kit section was a 1/25th scale General Lee ... without the Confederate flag on the roof!!! It looked strange, to say the least! It's like the Batmobile without the bat logo."

But another reader took a different stance. "I am from the West and yes to me the Confederate flag does not?(represent) anything positive," he wrote. "We don't see Germans flying around the swastika flags (because) it's?their history."

And yet another wrote that rather than produce a General Lee without the flag, he believed that toymakers would just stop making reproductions of the car. "Warner Bros. will no longer endorse the license for anything that has the Confederate flag on it," he wrote.?"Therefore, if you are a die-cast manufacturer, your license will not be approved if your sample has a Confederate flag on it, (such as the General Lee, Hazzard County Patrol cars, Cooter's tow truck and so on) if the sample is produced without a flag then it will be issued, but no one is going to do a General Lee with just the 01s and General Lee lettering, it would look silly."

That same writer noted that with an earlier version of the General Lee,?"Warner Bros. requested the flag not be seen when it was on a store shelf. A removable, body-colored cling was attached to the roof of the car to cover the flag until purchase. I knew when this happened that things would be changing soon."

Although the report still hasn't been fully confirmed, the mere idea that the General Lee could be altered has angered??Dukes of Hazzard? star Ben Jones. Jones played the General Lee's mechanic, Cooter Davenport, on "Dukes of Hazzard" and later served two terms in Congress as a Democrat from Georgia. He now owns Cooter?s Place, a chain of??Dukes of Hazzard? museums located?in Gatlinburg and Nashville, Tenn.

After hearing the report, Jones?released a letter of disapproval to the press on Wednesday, criticizing what he feels is a ?narrow-minded, elitist? move on the part of the television studio.

?More than 33 years since the show premiered on CBS-TV on Friday nights, Warner Bros. has issued a new and terribly insulting attack on the South, a region and a culture which Hollywood has trashed for decades," Jones wrote. "Some unnamed genius at the company feels that the flag is 'offensive to some' and therefore it has no business on a classic TV comedy about a bunch of good ol' boys and girls in the Southern mountains. This is a new level of "P.C." idiocy. I don't know about you, but I am tired of being insulted by morons.?

Jones?tells?TODAY that the decision could hurt the "Dukes of Hazzard" brand by misrepresenting the nature of the flag to young people who watch the show.

?It will make kids unhappy and confused,? he says. ?To me, they?re destroying innocence. They?re not responding to people who watch the show, they?re responding to those who don?t follow it. It?s insulting to my culture and my work.?

He adds, ?The flag is a part of the almost perfect design of that car, which has been voted the most popular car in the history of film and television. That?s not going to go away. It?s an idiotic decision.?

Jones stresses that he was an avid supporter of the Civil Rights Movement, participating in countless demonstrations?in the South in the?1960s. He says he?believes in a deep respect for all people, but believes that to assume the Confederate flag merely represents slavery is to overlook history.

?I have a good feel for where people?s heads are on this thing and I don?t understand why it?s happening,? Jones told TODAY. ?When ?The Dukes of Hazzard? was a big show, it was this positive thing about the car and the culture and the kids, and that went on for years. It is a permanent part of Americana.?

Should the Confederate flag be taken off the General Lee? Vote in our poll and tell us on Facebook.

Walls of lunar crater may hold patchy ice

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Small patches of ice could make up at most 5 to 10% of material in walls of Shackleton crater. Scientists using the Mini-RF radar on NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) have estimated the maximum amount of ice likely to be found inside a permanently shadowed lunar crater located near the moon's south pole. As much as 5 to 10 percent of material, by weight, could be patchy ice, according to the team of researchers led by Bradley Thomson at Boston University's Center for Remote Sensing.

"These terrific results from the Mini-RF team contribute to the evolving story of water on the moon," says LRO's deputy project scientist, John Keller of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "Several of the instruments on LRO have made unique contributions to this story, but only the radar penetrates beneath the surface to look for signatures of blocky ice deposits."

These are the first orbital radar measurements of Shackleton crater, a high-priority target for future exploration. The observations indicate an enhanced radar polarization signature, which is consistent with the presence of small amounts of ice in the rough inner wall slopes of the crater. Thomson and his colleagues reported the findings in a paper recently published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.

"The interior of this crater lies in permanent shadow and is a 'cold trap' -- a place cold enough to permit ice to accumulate," says Mini-RF's principal investigator, Ben Bussey of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Md. "The radar results are consistent with the interior of Shackleton containing a few percent ice mixed into the dry lunar soil."

These findings support the long-recognized possibility that areas of permanent shadow inside polar impact craters are sites of the potential accumulation of water. Numerous lines of evidence from recent spacecraft observations have revised the view that the lunar surface is a completely dry, inhospitable landscape. Thin films of water and hydroxyl have been detected across the lunar surface using several space-borne near-infrared spectrometers. Additionally, orbital neutron measurements indicate elevated levels of near?surface hydrogen in the polar regions; if in the form of water, this hydrogen would represent an average ice concentration of about 1.5% by weight in the polar regions.

The Shackleton findings are also consistent with those of the recent LCROSS spacecraft's controlled collision with a nearby permanently shadowed polar region near the lunar south pole, which revealed evidence for water in the plume kicked up by its impact. A radar instrument flown on India's Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft in 2009 found evidence for ice deposits in craters at the lunar north pole. Measurements of the albedo (surface reflectance) inside Shackleton crater using LRO's laser altimeter and far?ultraviolet detector are also consistent with the presence of a small amount of ice.

"Inside the crater, we don't see evidence for glaciers like on Earth," says Thomson. "Glacial ice has a whopping radar signal, and these measurements reveal a much weaker signal consistent with rugged terrain and limited ice."

The radar measurements of Shackleton crater were made during three separate observations between December 2009 and June 2010. Radar illuminates shadowed regions and can detect deposits of water or ice, which have a distinctive radar polarization signature compared to the surrounding material. In addition, radar penetrates the terrain to depths of a meter or two and can measure water or ice buried beneath the surface. Radar measurements of Shackleton crater place an upper bound on the ice content of the uppermost meter of loose material of the crater's walls at between 5 and 10% ice by weight.

"We are following up these tantalizing results with additional observations," says Bussey. "Mini-RF is currently acquiring new bistatic radar images of the moon using a signal transmitted by the Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico. These bistatic images will help us distinguish between surface roughness and ice, providing further unique insights into the locations of volatile deposits."

Thinking About Hiring a Bookkeeper? | Kashoo

One of the toughest parts of running a business is the fact that, in the the beginning, you do everything. Business development. Accounting. Inventory. Marketing. HR. Payroll. Paperwork. (Oh, the paperwork!) But as your business grows, the opportunity to offload certain responsibilities presents itself, allowing you to focus on what you do best. The challenge is figuring out what to offload and when.

Oftentimes, accounting and bookkeeping are at the top of that list. And naturally so: the more bookkeeping activity you have, the higher the likelihood that your business is doing well. With that, we have a short checklist for business owners to think on should they be considering some outside help with their books:

  • Are you using online accounting software that is simple, easy-to-understand, and the right fit for your business?
  • Would a professional bookkeeper look at that accounting software and confirm that it meets their professional standards?
  • Are you unable to commit as much time to doing your small business accounting as you used to?
  • Do you have the expendable funds to hire some professional assistance?
  • What are you looking to get out of hiring some bookkeeping help?

In addition to this checklist, we chatted with a handful of Kashoo Most Valuable Professionals (MVPs, for short), accountants and bookkeepers and asked them?

?When should a small business owner consider
professional bookkeeping and/or accounting help??

Here is what they had to say?

  • ?If a business owner is spending more time trying to figure out the books than actually working on their business, it?s time! Small business owners want to save money by doing their own books, but can often end up struggling with them, wasting their valuable money-making hours.? - Jodie Buckler, BucklerBookkeeping (via Twitter)
  • ?When they have no true idea where their business stands in regards to their Financial Picture. Only knowing ?I brought in X dollars last month? doesn?t cut it.? - Michael Senteno (via Facebook)
  • ?When they realize they?re spending more time on their business than in their business. Any business owner should spend the majority of their time bringing in new business and making sales and getting help or outsourcing any activity that takes them away from that.? - FBC, Canada?s Small Business Tax Specialists (via Facebook)
  • ?It might make sense, and they might know they need help, but they may feel like they can?t afford it. Maybe that?s when they need it most.? - Claire Eldred (via Facebook)
  • ?Business owners should always have outside help; the important question is the level of delegation. Seek advice in the beginning, do as much of the work yourself until you know your own numbers, and then hand off the day-to-day tasks when work takes away from your main role as leader and visionary.? - Eric Matthews, ThatBookkeeper.com (via email)

Trillian gets updated to version 2.0, now includes native iPad support

Cerulean Studios has just released version 2.0 of their popular instant messaging app Trillian. The biggest addition is native iPad support. Trillian has been re-written to take advantage of the iPad's screen real estate by not only making things bigger but by making the app more functional and tailored for use on an iPad.

Even though iMessage has gained some traction and become a fast replacement for some people in regards to instant messaging, IM still has its place due to cross-platform collaboration. Trillian has long been a large contender considering it combines all your instant messaging networks into one easy to use streamline client.

Cerulean Studios could have easily added iPad support by scaling everything up but they chose not to in favor of creating a better experience for iPad users:

Trillian 2.0 features a beautiful new interface designed exclusively for your iPad. Because Trillian?s primary element is a collection of small chat bubbles, simply ?making things bigger? felt awkward to us; worse, large windows with small text snippets sometimes required a slight turn of the head while reading. Our solution keeps chat windows sanely sized and uses the rest of the screen for tabs, swiping, and in-app notifications!

The overall user interface has also been updated as well as other security enhancements. You can head on over to the App Store now to check it out.

Syrian army drops leaflets over Damascus

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) ? Syrian military helicopters have dropped hundreds of leaflets over Damascus and its suburbs urging rebels to hand over their weapons or face inevitable death.

The warning comes amid a widening military offensive to recapture areas on the edge of the capital and its outskirts that have fallen into the hands of rebels fighting to topple President Bashar Assad.

The focus of the 17-month uprising has returned to the capital's suburbs after weeks of heavy fighting in the northern city of Aleppo.

The leaflets dropped Tuesday are signed by the armed forces and the army's general command.

The leaflets said the Syrian army is determined to "cleanse every inch of Syria" and that "gunmen" have no choice but to give up their weapons or face "inevitable death."

VIEWPOINTS: PROTESTS

One viewpoint, from Tampa's police chief, Jane Castor: Protesters around the GOP convention can say and do whatever they wish "as long as they don't cross the line into criminal behavior."

And another, from Cara Jennings, a voter outreach organizer from Palm Beach County, Fla.: "They've militarized Tampa."

So far, protests have been muted and only two people have been arrested. That's in stark contrast to four years ago, when hundreds of protesters were arrested at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minn. In Tampa, protesters, who for months planned to converge on Tampa to showcase their gripes and messages, have been peaceful and small in number.

The 7 New Rules of Lingerie

Awhile back, I did a post on the 7 Deadly Lingerie Sins. It?s become one of the most popular articles we?ve published to date (people really love sin, apparently), but I think it?s time for a bit of an update, and a new, 2012 spin.

Since I?m always around lingerie in some capacity, I hear a ton of lingerie rules everyday. And most of them, while well-intentioned, are pretty generic. You know what I mean: get a bra fitting, don?t wear the same bra more than one day in a row, have at least one bra that matches your skin tone, and so forth and so on.

It?s important stuff ? there are lingerie newbies being born every single day ? but it can also be a little repetitive?especially if you?ve been interested in lingerie for awhile and are already familiar with the basics.

So I felt like it might be nice to have a second set of lingerie rules that supplements the first few we always hear about. And since I love coming up with arbitrary lists of rules (don?t judge; it makes me feel wanted), I?ve put together a few things I think every Lingerie Addict should keep in mind when it comes to intimate apparel.

1) Affordable is subjective. One of the most popular questions I get is ?Where can I find an affordable lingerie?? And while I understand what people are trying to ask, it?s not the best way of asking it. ?Affordable? is incredibly subjective and what?s a good price to me could very well be too high (or too low!) for you. Of course, there?s nothing wrong with being on a budget. But if you have a price point in mind, it?s hard for other people to connect you with the right choices when you?re being vague about what you can afford.

(On a related note, no criticizing other people?s budgets. If you don?t spend more than $5 on a pair of tights, good for you. If you refuse to spend less than a $100 on a bra, kudos. I?m glad you have a system that works. But it doesn?t mean everyone else needs to shop the way you do.)

2) Lingerie is not just about sex. I am so tired of constantly being told that lingerie is only for women who are in heterosexual relationships to wear for their men. Don?t get me wrong?it?s great if you?ve found lacey knickers help out with your love life, but lingerie is more than just a bedroom accessory. And if your significant other isn?t into lingerie, that?s okay. Wear it for you. So many people think lingerie is only bras and garter belts, but it also includes robes and chemises and slips and loungewear and so much more. The whole point of lingerie is to make you feel good. The layer closest to your skin should help you feel comfortable and confident and amazing and awesome all day long. And if that?s not what?s happening, that?s a problem. Let?s start moving the conversation beyond the sexy sexy, and to how our intimates make us feel.

3) Be willing to look around before insisting no one makes anything in your size. At least once per day, I get an email or a Tumblr message from someone who tells me that no makes pretty bras above a D cup or below an A cup. Ladies, that is simply not true. Now, you may not be able to find those bras (they?re called ?extended sizing?) in your local shopping mall, but they are out there, and part of being a proactive consumer is looking around before giving up. There have never (and I mean NEVER) been more lingerie options available for women at either size of the size spectrum than right now. Whether you?re a 28AA, a 42N, or a 50DD, I know for a fact that there is at least one brand out there is making pretty bras in your size. You just have to look.

4) But avoid looking for unicorns. While being a proactive consumer is good, having unreasonable expectations is not. There is no 100% silk, handmade, quarter cup bra in a F cup that retails for less than $25. Unless it?s being made in a sweatshop. And those are not okay. Shopping for lingerie is already hard enough; don?t make it any more difficult than it has to be by setting yourself up for failure at the start. Having a sense of what?s out there is part of being an informed consumer.

5) Everything is not going to fit you perfectly. That?s okay. It?s true for everyone, and it?s not always the fault of the lingerie. If you?re an E cup, a flimsy bralette is going to look different on you than on a B cup. If you have shallow boobs,? you won?t fill out a bullet bra the same one someone with full boobs does. If you have a high waist/hip ratio, every panty brand just won?t work for you. Unless you?re the actual sample model for someone?s company, trial-and-error when it comes to what brands are best for your body should always be expected. And when you do find something that works, buy it?because that brand has already shown you that you?re their target customer.

6) Never feel ashamed of your lingerie choices. If you like really skimpy, tawdry, X-rated lingerie, embrace it. If you only wear the vintage stuff, go for it. If it?s silk 24/7 for you, fine.? And if you prefer plain, organic cotton briefs, that?s great too. What you like is what you like, and that?s okay. And no one else should me making you feel like there?s a problem with your choices. If it?s being made, that means someone?s buying it. And as the saying goes, the world takes all kinds.

7) Be a conscious consumer. There are tons of different ways of being conscious, and I?m not here to say one kind is better than another. We all have limitations on our time, but it?s worth looking at where your undergarments are made, who made them, and what conditions the people who made them work in. I know how overwhelming that kind of research can be, but if it helps, think of the thing that matters most to you (organic or fair trade or locally made, etc. etc.) and start from there. When it comes to making things better within the lingerie industry, consumers have the ultimate power?we just have to exercise it.

As always, I love to hear what you think, so if you?ve got a rule of your own or disagree with what I?ve listed here, let?s talk about it in the comments!

Computer detecting used to crack down on child pornography ...

GRAHAM ? On page after page of search warrants filed in Alamance County Superior Court, the graphic descriptions of the photos and videos are appalling.

Children, most between 6 and 13 years old, being sexually abused or photographed unclothed and in lewd positions. Some of the children in the photos appear distressed or are covering their faces. Some are alone. Others are being coerced or forced into sexual acts with adults or other children.

The descriptions are written by investigators who use sophisticated software to download and track the source of the illegal material to computers in and around Alamance County. These detectives must view the material, both to log it as evidence while building criminal cases and to possibly identify the children.

??The stuff you have to see, I can only watch it for so long,? said Sgt. David Sykes of the Alamance County Sheriff?s Department. ?It?s not something I can do for 8 hours a day. I have to step away from it, have a cup of coffee, and come back.?

Sykes is one of two investigators at the sheriff?s department who are members of the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, a national collective of agents working to squelch illegal pornography and online solicitation of minors. The task force was created in 1998 by the U.S. Department of Justice?s Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention to educate and train officers on how to track and stop online crimes. Nationwide, more than 3,000 agencies participate in ICAC.

The State Bureau of Investigation oversees ICAC among 135 affiliate agencies in North Carolina. Between 2007 and 2011, the SBI?s Computer Crimes unit opened 768 cases involving child pornography and exploitation, said spokeswoman Noelle Talley. The SBI got more than 5,600 tips about the crimes during that time.

The sheriff?s department joined with ICAC in 2008, sending Sykes through an intensive series of training and software licensure. Since then, he?s logged hundreds of hours of training in courses on how to catch predators and illegal pornography traders. Sykes believes the ICAC system is working to cut down on the online exploitation of children.

?The more enforcement that we?ve done in the county, the less we see? being traded, Sykes said.

?Thanks to the Internet, the underworld of child abuse and exploitation now knows few geographical boundaries. Traders of child pornography usually never meet or know each others? names. Peer-to-peer file-sharing networks and online sharing give them fast, anonymous access to each others? data.

ICAC agents developed systems that track the trade of known and suspected child pornography over P2P networks. The investigative softwares are built around the public nature of online file sharing, Sykes said. When users log into file-sharing programs, they automatically make the documents they share public ? like opening their front door and allowing the world to walk through their homes.

It begins with following a suspected computer?s Internet Protocol address.

The ICAC software allows agents to identify suspected IP addresses, identify the files they are sharing as known child pornography, record the dates and number of times they log into and share those files on a network and download the suspected files to law enforcement computers.

Sykes wouldn?t say exactly how an individual IP address becomes the target of an investigation, but ICAC and the SBI routinely take tips from the public. Sykes said that all of Alamance County?s ICAC investigations are ?self-initiated.? Even if users elect not to share their files on P2P networks, they automatically share their portion of an image or video during the download process, he said.

There are safeguards to prevent law enforcement sharing their downloaded files with the peer-to-peer network, Sykes said.

Once an IP address is flagged, the software automates the information collection process. Another program allows agencies to locate where the IP addresses are operating and Internet service providers, such as Time Warner Cable, provide law enforcement with the name on the account registered to the IP address.

?They don?t have any idea that we?re looking at them until they get the knock on the front door,? Sykes said.

The process is accurate, Sykes said. There?s only been one Alamance County case in which a search warrant was issued in suspicion of child pornography and the contraband wasn?t found, he said. That instance was likely due to a typo in the IP address matchup by an Internet service provider, leading investigators to the wrong address.

?

UNLIKE 20 or 30 years ago, when child pornography was traded through mail, it?s rare that physical copies of child pornography are found, said sheriff?s office spokesman Randy Jones.

Detectives instead seize computers and electronic devices, such as thumb drives, SD cards and external hard drives. Computer forensics experts must scour the computers for evidence. The process can take up to 40 hours for a crime lab to analyze a single computer, Talley said. Sykes does his own forensics and doesn?t rely on the SBI. He also aids computer forensics investigations in Burlington and other Alamance County cities.

The ICAC software tells investigators whether a piece of child pornography has been previously identified by law enforcement. If Sykes finds a new image of child pornography, he alerts the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in hopes the victim can be identified. Sometimes pediatricians are asked to examine the images if there?s a doubt about whether an individual pictured is an adult.

?Unfortunately, most of the time there?s no question. It?s a misconception that child pornography is (of teenagers who appear old enough to be adults). That?s because these predators are attracted to children. They aren?t attracted to other adults,? Sykes said.

Alamance County Assistant District Attorney Lori Wickline, an ICAC-trained prosecutor who handles most of the child sex abuse cases here, and Sykes have learned to trust each other?s judgment while working cases together. They regularly communicate about potential charges and the outcomes of their cases.

?David is a phenomenal investigator, crossing every ?T? and dotting every ?I,? ? Wickline said. ?I know how thorough he is. And so, if he?s not comfortable charging someone, I know I wouldn?t be comfortable prosecuting the case. I respect his work that much.?

The illicit files are stored as evidence, locked away, until the case is brought to trial. Not even Wickline is allowed to possess the illegal material in preparation for trial. She must view the files with Sykes, she said. Sometimes Sykes will provide censored hard copies of the material if needed.

None of the county?s recent child pornography cases have gone to trial. If a case were to go before a jury, then jurors would have to view the images. Most cases end in plea arrangements because defendants usually admit guilt, Wickline said, and because part of the goal is to get traders registered as sex offenders and protect potential future victims.

?There?s also a sense of relief. It?s a very secretive aspect of these men?s lives ? and they are mostly men. Many of them don?t have criminal records. So there?s relief because they don?t have to hide anymore,? she said.

Sykes and Jones also spoke of the hidden nature of people who view and collect child pornography.

The suspects are usually middle-aged males. If married, their wives have no idea about their online activities. They are neighbors, friends and church members. An October, SBI-led statewide sting netted 24 arrests on child porn charges. The men arrested included an active duty Marine, a teacher and a firefighter ? men otherwise considered pillars of their community.

And it?s because of the underground nature of the child porn trade that it?s constantly evolving, they said.

New types of P2P networks have emerged, forcing ICAC to develop new programs to combat exploitation on those fronts. Data transfer over smart phones and tablets has also exploded over the last few years, offering new technological hurdles for investigators. Wireless Internet and cloud-sourcing pose challenges. Sykes is also being asked more often to work with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to investigate data and items coming into the U.S.

Because of the intense nature of the investigations and subject matter, ICE requires psychological evaluations every six months, Sykes said. ICAC also offers counseling options to agents.

?

High-tech tracking

The Internet Crimes Against Children task force, including 135 agencies in North Carolina and hundreds more across the country, employs sophisticated technology to track traders of child pornography on the Internet. Here?s a look at how they do what they do:

?

- Internet Protocol (IP) addresses

Each computer has a unique Internet Protocol address. Customers of Internet service providers, such as Time Warner Cable, can be identified by those companies? logs and individual account information.

?

- Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Networks

Instead of a direct, one-on-one system of sharing ? such as emailing a photo to someone ? peer-to-peer sharing allows thousands or millions of anonymous users access to each others? files. Traders of child pornography around the world harnessed the P2P network called Gnutella to quickly and easily share illegal videos and images with each other. Other P2P networks have also arisen in the last few years.

Law enforcement computer programs allow investigators to see and search files shared by an individual computer?s IP address for child pornography.

?

- SHA-1 Values

Each file has a digital fingerprint, called a SHA-1 value. The SHA-1 value code of an individual video or image remains the same every time a file is shared over a network. Changing the file name of a photo doesn?t change its SHA-1 code.

Investigators use software to compare SHA-1 values of known or suspected child pornography with shared files sent over peer-to-peer networks.

?

- Mapping IP addresses

IP addresses are registered to geographic locations. Computer software makes it possible for Alamance County investigators to track IP addresses to within or near Alamance County.

?

- Search warrants

When a local IP address is registered as sharing suspected child pornography and matched to a local address, investigators have probable cause to search the residence. They apply for a search warrant through a judge or magistrate. During searches of homes, they confiscate computers, discs, hard drives, jump drives and other media and storage devices. Investigators then scour the collected items for potential evidence.
