NCAA to reconsider Boise State football sanctions

BOISE, Idaho (AP) The NCAA said Friday it will reconsider scholarship sanctions imposed on Boise State's football program.

In a 25-page decision, the NCAA Division I Infractions Appeals Committee concluded that the scholarship penalty announced last September, in addition to Boise State's self-imposed sanctions, was "excessive such that it constituted an abuse of discretion."

Boise State's voluntary measures included three fewer scholarships for the 2011-12 school year and fewer preseason practices. The NCAA added scholarship reductions from 85 to 82 through the 2013-14 school year and limited contact during spring practice.

The university appealed the additional sanctions for the football program, arguing that the NCAA's history of scholarship reduction penalties was inconsistent with penalties imposed in the case of Boise State. The appeals committee agreed.

"Of the 10 cases that involved the FBS and reductions of football grants-in-aid over the past five years, only two had reductions of grants-in-aid in football as great or greater than those imposed in this case," the panel found.

The appeals committee upheld the spring practice penalty while remanding the scholarship sanctions back to the infractions committee for reconsideration.

"We are pleased that the Appeals Committee agreed in the case of the scholarships. We will await a decision from the Infractions Committee on the final scholarship penalty," said Boise State President Bob Kustra.

Boise State has not been given a timeline for when a new decision will reached, said university spokesman Frank Zang.

The NCAA cited major violations by the football program and other sports last year when placing Boise State on probation for three years and imposing other sanctions. The violations occurred over a five-year period.

At the time, Kustra said Boise State's rapid growth over the last decade, from an upstart Division II program into a perennial Top 25 team, likely outstripped the school's capacity to keep tabs on its compliance with NCAA rules.

Kustra, who fired athletic director Gene Bleymaier in August, said he'd hoped the self-imposed sanctions would have been enough to avoid probation. Boise State appealed the football portion of the NCAA sanctions, while accepting the punishment placed on its tennis and track programs.

Boise State has since revamped its NCAA compliance efforts, hiring additional staff and implementing an educational program, the university said. The school has also made changes to its student-athlete handbook, while heightening training and awareness programs, officials said.

"The entire process has deepened our commitment to compliance, resulted in tangible changes to our program and created a greater awareness of the NCAA rules," athletic director Mark Coyle said in a statement.

Woods climbs into the hunt at Congressional

BETHESDA, Md. (AP) ? Tiger Woods had the round he needed on a steamy day at Congressional. Robert Garrigus had the round he has come to expect.

As the temperature climbed toward 100 degrees Friday in the AT&T National, Garrigus kept pounding tee shots and making birdies until he finished with a 4-under 67, giving him a share of the lead with Jimmy Walker and Brendon De Jonge among the early starters.

Garrigus wasn't the least bit surprised. It was his sixth consecutive round under par at Congressional, dating to his week at the U.S. Open last year when he became a footnote in history as only the fourth American to break par all four rounds in a U.S. Open.

"I feel like this is my kind of course," he said.

Walker and De Jonge each had a 69 to join Garrigus at 5-under 137. Pat Perez (69), Rod Pampling (67) and S.Y. Noh (68) were another shot behind.

Woods got back into the mix with a 68, which included a 50-foot eagle putt on the 16th hole and a couple of pars that were equally important. Woods was in trouble early after a few tee shots were caught in the dense rough that makes Congressional feel like a U.S. Open and forced him to hack out short of the green. Both times, he hit wedges that landed by the hole, bounced 15 feet by and caught the slope to come back within 3 feet.

"The pars at 14 and 15 were something I needed to have happen," Woods said. "I hit two good wedge shots in there after two poor drives and gave myself a couple good looks, made those, and then I rewarded all that hard work at the next hole with eagle."

Woods was three shots out of the lead, and not likely to fall too far behind. The course, already looking like it was supposed to play last year for the U.S. Open, was getting firm and crusty from the scorching heat. Towels were used to wipe sweaty faces more than to clean irons. Tim Herron was on the putting green, ready to tee off in the afternoon, when he asked, "Anyone pass out?"

It was the kind of day reminiscent of when Ken Venturi won the 1964 U.S. Open at Congressional, so dehydrated he almost didn't finish. And high heat was expected well into the weekend, making this a test of survival.

But there were birdies available, with some pins tucked behind slopes to feed the ball close to the hole. Woods used the slope to escape with easy pars on the 14th and 15th, and to set up a tap-in birdie on the eighth near the end of his round.

Garrigus went the conventional route ? at least for him.

After finishing his opening round Thursday evening, which he described in ho-hum fashion as "just another round under par here," he couldn't help but mention that with the heat, the ball is traveling far.

"Maybe for you," Jim Furyk said as he walked by and heard what Garrigus said.

Garrigus took advantage of a forward tee on the 12th hole to stuff his approach inside 4 feet, and then he really let his length work to his advantage toward the end of the back nine. He belted a 348-yard tee shot beyond the bunkers on the par-5 16th that left him only a 6-iron into the green. And on the 18th, with the tees move up to 481 yards, he hit a drive so far along the downhill fairway that he had only a lob wedge left. He spun that back to a few feet.

He closed out his round on the par-5 ninth, which played 597 yards. He hit 7-wood for his second shot just short of the green to set up an easy birdie.

Woods was hopeful of making up more ground on that hole, except that he had a downhill lie in the first cut of rough. His goal was to hit a 4-iron to the apron and have it scoot up to the green, but he pulled into the rough in the valley and couldn't get his chip close enough for a reasonable shot at birdie.

Garrigus couldn't complain about his position.

"It's just a share of the lead on Friday, but it's a good spot to be in," he said. "It's better than missing the cut."

No need for him to worry about that around this place.

Garrigus was rightfully proud when he mentioned Thursday evening that he was only the fourth American with four sub-par rounds in the U.S. Open. The others were Lee Trevino at Oak Hill in 1968, Lee Janzen at Baltusrol in 1993 and Curtis Strange at Oakmont in 1994. Strange and Garrigus are the only ones in that group who didn't win.

Even going back to previous AT&T National events at Congressional, Garrigus has quite a record ? this was his 18th round, and he has only been over par three times.

"Everything about this course fits my eye," he said. "If I'm playing well and swinging it good, I feel like I can hit every fairway, just the way everything sets up. They give you perfect targets. There's stuff to aim at. That's what I love."

Length never hurts, but it helps to cope with the heat. Perez, who grew up in San Diego, was asked five questions after his second straight round of 69. Three of those answers included the words, "It's hot."

The biggest tease of the day was the sound of a sprinkler ? not on the course, but in a backyard next to the 14th green.

Woods doesn't mind the heat, especially living in south Florida. He compared Friday with the PGA Championship he won in 2007 at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Okla., when the temperature reached triple figures before breakfast could be digested.

"I've played some good tournaments over the year, in Malaysia and other places, where it's hot," he said. "Certainly fitness, running all those miles and lifting all those weights, it comes into play when you get days like this, and consecutive days like this."

Living On The Vedge: 5 Years of Living on the Vedge

It's been 5 years since I first sat down to share my thoughts on veggie food with you all. I started LoTV as a young freelance writer still in college who was interested in writing about vegetarian food. Since then, every few days I'd check in with a restaurant review or my latest food find in Philly (I was a hungry little thing). I had many the adventure and tried on more writing styles than Sybil, but I always found myself here, ready to put something down. It was so that I could look back on it later, but it was also to inform other people that a vegetarian could have panache, and not just be political. Through it all, I ended up becoming a vegan, learned how to cook and began posting recipes, met someone who could keep me on my faux leather clad toes, and found myself impassioned by nutrition and wellness. I've connected with some truly amazing food-lovers and entrepreneurs along the way, whom I now count as good friends and would gladly give my last bite of raw chocolate to.

I want to thank anyone who pops by here. This might never be an incredibly organized blog with a consistent schedule of beautiful recipes and exciting content. I try not to make it just a vegan blog, or an outlet focused on ethics, although that is something I feel strongly about, that's just not entirely what I'm doing here. This is my take on a vegan lifestyle, a collection of thoughtfully sourced products, a balance of nourishing recipes and vegan indulgences, and my experiences.

Some observations?

  • It's hard to believe how much vegan frozen food I ate while in college, a habit that was shrugged off after eating at enough of Philly's finer restaurants and developing my palate, and I have to thank ?my food-obsessed friends for showing me the way.?
  • I also have no clue what anything I wrote pre-2009 even meant. I was incredibly sober and innocent, except when I was not.?
  • In 2010, I fell hard for raw food. It was inspiring and totally different and never boring, and it changed my health, my body, and the way that I think about food.?
  • 2011 was my favorite blog year. I spent more time in the kitchen than ever before, took too many photos, and had so much energy. The recipe ideas flowed.?
  • I make a really good cocktail now.

This year, things will be a little different. I'm living in a more rural town for the first time, which happens to be a very green and vegan-welcome place, but it's certainly not Philly, where I was constantly out and about at blogger events, restaurant openings, and cooking for lots of friends and parties. My pace here is...slow, and relaxed, and enjoyable, and I prepare a lot of quinoa-bean bowls because our grad student budget is okay with that. I'll be posting recipes and travels when I feel that they're special, and I hope you'll stick with me as we prepare to step into the hospitality industry when this year is through.?

XOXO, namaste, cheers, and all of that,

-Kelly

P.S. I'll be in Philly next week, in the usual places, and perhaps some new ones? You tell me! Or let's drink together.

Jamie Dupree's Washington Insider: Congress moves highway, student loan bills

By Jamie Dupree

Before leaving town on a July 4th break, the House and Senate on Friday are expected to approve major highway and student loan interest rate measures, demonstrating again that serious lawmaking can take place even at a time when both parties accuse the other of rank partisanship and gridlock.

The highway bill has been several years in the making, as Congress has relied on almost two dozen short term extensions of a couple of months each.

The student loan plan will prevent interest rates on newly subsidized loans from doubling on July 1.

Also included in this bill are a number of other legislative items, like a flood insurance program re-authorization that needed action by this weekend as well and some legislation dealing with sport fishing and more.

I thought I would let you thumb through the bills that have been combined by just looking at the Table of Contents, to give you a better idea on what is in this measure.

Pick something out and leave a comment. ?Final language of highway bill/student loan deal can be seen at?? - a full explanation is at?

Photosynthesis re-wired

Thursday, June 28, 2012

Harnessing the power of the sun has inspired scientists and engineers to look for ways to turn sunlight into clean energy to heat houses, fuel factories and power devices. While a majority of this research focuses on energy production, some researchers are looking at the potential uses of these novel solar technologies in other areas.

Boston College Assistant Professor of Chemistry Dunwei Wang's work with silicon nanowires and his related construct, Nanonets, has shown these stable, tiny wire-like structures can be used in processes ranging from energy collection to hydrogen-generating water-splitting.

Teaming up with fellow Boston College Assistant Professor of Chemistry Kian L. Tan, the researchers have taken aim at a role for nanowires in photosynthesis.

Their work has produced a process that closely resembles photosynthesis, employing silicon nanowires to collect light energy to power reactions capable of synthesizing the basic compounds of two popular pain-killing, anti-inflammatory drugs, they report in the current edition of Angewandte Chemie, the journal of the German Chemical Society.

The reaction sequence offers an approach that differs from earlier attempts to sequester carbon dioxide with sunlight and solves the vexing problem of carbon's low selectivity, which so far has limited earlier methods to the production of fuels. Tan and Wang report their process offers the selectivity required to produce complex organic intermediaries capable of developing pharmaceuticals and high-value chemicals.

The process succeeds in taming stubborn carbon, which structurally resists most efforts to harness it for a single chemical product. Typically, refined forms of carbon molecules must first be produced to produce the necessary results.

"If we can start to use carbon dioxide and light to power reactions in organic chemistry, there's a huge benefit to that. It allows you to bypass the middle man of fossil fuels by using light to drive the chemical reaction," said Tan. "The key is the interaction of two fields ? materials and synthetic chemistry. Separately, these fields may not have accomplished this on their own. But together, we combined our knowledge to make it work."

During photosynthesis, plants capture sunlight and use this solar energy and carbon dioxide to fuel chemical reactions.

Tan and Wang used silicon nanowires as a photocathode, exploiting the wire's efficient means of converting solar energy to electrical energy. Electrons released from the atoms in the nanowires are then transferred to organic molecules to trigger chemical reactions.

In this case, the researchers used aromatic ketones, which when struck by electrons become active and attack and bind carbon dioxide. Further steps produced an acid that allowed the team to create the precursors to ibuprofen and naproxen with high selectivity and high yield, the team reports.

Tan and Wang were joined in the research by Research Assistant Guangbi Yuan, PhD '12, graduate student Rui Liu, doctoral student Candice L. Joe, and former doctoral student Thomas E. Lightburn, PhD '11.

Tan said it is no accident that the process so closely resembles natural photosynthesis, as chemists are constantly drawing inspiration from nature in their work.

"Researchers in my field are always drawing inspiration from nature," said Tan. "You take the basic lessons and you try to do it in an artificial way. In this work, we're trying to learn lessons from nature, although we can't copy nature directly."

Guerlain's La Petite Robe Noire | Jawhara

Guerlain?s La Petite Robe Noire returns to this chic and offbeat artistic stance by
giving free rein to Kuntzel+Deygas.
Olivier Kuntzel, a precursor of digital graphic art in France,
graduated from the Olivier de Serres Applied Arts School with a
diploma in visual communication. Florence Deygas, a key figure
in ?elegant drawing?, graduated from the Gobelins Visual Arts
School with a diploma in animated film. Since 1990, they have
united their talents as designers and illustrators under the name
Kuntzel+Deygas to co-create ?narrative? graphic design with an
inimitable style.
Their ?creatures? have claimed a place in all modes of creation:
objects, cinema, advertising campaigns and exhibitions all over
the world.
Their illustrated duos ? The Beauty (by Deygas) and Her Beast (by
Kuntzel), the two black dogs Caperino & Peperone or Winney &
Loosey, the orange bull and the black donkey ? helped create a
buzz for the greatest couture, watch, leather goods and jewellery
houses, even finding their way to magazine covers.
On the big screen, they designed legendary opening credits:

Scientists They re Just Like Us! They Don't Like Equations Either.

Source: CDC

I was a bit amused when I read a press release headline this week: ?Scientists struggle with mathematical details.? I expected the story to be about occasions when scientists had misunderstood, misinterpreted, or misapplied mathematical formulas in their published research, but instead the study in the June 25 issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reports that research papers with lots of mathematical details are cited by other scholars less often than papers with fewer. Clearly, this disparity could slow scientific progress if important but technical papers are ignored.

Being a mathematician, I wanted to know how someone would go about quantifying such citational differences. I learned that it?s not an exact science, but the research provides some interesting data and suggestions about how to improve scientific communication.

The study featured an analysis of 649 papers from 1998 about ecology and evolution, fields that at times employ complicated equations. The researchers used the number of equations per page as a proxy for technical level. Equations were counted only if they were printed on a separate line from text, not if they were in line; if two equations were printed on the same line, they were counted separately.

The study authors, biologists Tim Fawcett and Andrew D. Higginson of the University of Bristol, assessed the impact of a paper by drawing on citation data from? Thomson Reuters, excluding self-citation, which was defined as shared surnames between any authors of the two papers. Fawcett and Higginson note that this approach may have led to a few spurious self-citations (two unrelated Smiths, perhaps) but think that these errors probably exerted only a very small effect. (They don?t mention spurious non-self-citations that may have arisen from name changes because of marriage, spy activity or the witness protection program, but I?m sure that problem is even smaller.)

Fawcett and Higginson found on average a 22 percent decrease in citations for every additional equation per page. They attribute this drop mainly to fewer citations in non-theoretical papers. The proxy for theoretical versus non-theoretical paper is whether the word ?model? appears in the title or abstract, taking out common phrases such as ?model species? and ?experimental model.? This choice seems like a pretty rough estimate, and they note that a random sample of articles indicated that 84.5 percent were correctly classified. That hit rate sounds like a low level of accuracy, but categorizing every one of the 28,068 citing papers was impossible.

In any case, Fawcett and Higginson found little correlation between equation density and citations by theoretical papers, and a large reduction in citations by non-theoretical papers for papers with more than 0.5 equations per page. They found that equations appearing in appendices had no effect on citation rate.

Some of the proxies seem a bit problematic to me, but overall this correlation may be real. Of course, the elephant in the room is how to measure, in some objective way, the ?true? impact each paper should have and compare it with the citation data. Unfortunately, that would require some sort of voodoo.

Taking this study at face value, I think it might provide a lot of us with a bit of relief. Scientists are just people like us who prefer reading words to wading through equations. Frankly, I?m curious about a similar study for mathematical papers. I don?t think I?m the only mathematician whose eyes sometimes glaze over when presented with a solid page of equations, nary an English sentence in sight.

The question, though, is what to do with the technical details. Even if people don?t like reading them, that is where the science happens. And writing a paper based on your analysis without including the details of that analysis seems like a recipe for disaster.

The researchers suggest two main approaches: better mathematical education for scientists and better explanations of mathematics in papers with lots of equations. They stress that the latter is more immediate and easier to implement, noting that better education would take quite a while to trickle down and be effective. But I wonder whether better education would actually help at all. I am never one to take a stand against further math education for scientists, but the problem doesn?t seem to be poor understanding; people just don?t like reading equations.

Based on my own experiences as a mathematician, I can understand that. Even if I can wade through an equation in a paper, a sentence explaining it is valuable. The better explanation approach would probably lead to more readable papers, but adding text for readability makes papers longer, and space is at a premium in print journals. The authors also note that technical details can be relegated to appendices, either in print or online, with the caveat that theoreticians should make all assumptions explicit in the main text. Otherwise, those who don?t travel to the appendix to see the nitty-gritty details might misinterpret the results. Many journals already leave some technical details to appendices already, so the authors are just advocating this approach on a larger scale.

I have another suggestion: Eye tracking and mild electroshock therapy. If scientists skim over pages of equations or stare into space for too long while reading a technical paper, they get a gentle jolt of electricity to bring them back to the important equations at hand. Just kidding. Papers shouldn?t be literally electrifying, but more readable papers might help ensure that the best science makes an impact.

China opens record-breaking bridge over canyon

Highest and the longest tunnel-to-tunnel bridge and it is in China. It looks like the Chinese are on a roll. They have some of the best and most creative engineers in the world. On earth and in space we must give the Chinese their props.

The Aizhai Extra Large Suspension Bridge will link two tunnels that are 1,176 metres apart and 365 metres above the Dehang Canyon in Hunan province.

It is a section of the Jishou-Chadong Expressway with is 64-kilometre's long. It is a highway with eight lanes, four going this way and four going that way. There are 18 tunnels total and I would say take your camera and video recorder and anything else you have because this has got to be one of the most gorgeous highways and bridges ever.

Of course, if you have a problem with heights you won't like it, but just think of the hundreds of workers that built it, and all those who will be working to maintain it.

If you have watched Ice Road Truckers you will have seen the episodes where in the off season they have gone to different parts of the world to truck and they always try to pick the worse roads they can find. Well, this was one of them with tailbacks, narrow, tailbacks that have about half an inch to spare on each side when two vehicles are passing, especially when one is a truck. This will make it a whole lot better even though the IRT's will probably shun it for just that reason.

It has 1,888 lights to increase visibility at night which is another drawback to those truckers as optimal visibility to them is about two feet. By the bye, my fave is Lisa and then Rick..

NEWSFLASH!!! I have said before that I will delete a blog when I put a new one on. Since that is proving so difficult to remember I will put in on every blog. I find it quite charming that someone would actually save my blogs so they can repost them. True enough, China is a fasinating country with many accomplishments. It would behoove all of us to try to learn something about other cultures.

How Business Analytics Consulting Can Benefit Your Business ...

There are all sorts of businesses out there and each one is of the belief that there is something that sets them apart. It?s true that being unique can give you the leverage you need to stand out from the rest but the truth is all businesses are guided by a certain set of rules on how to make companies thrive. Businesses need to take a good look at themselves then and assess their structure to determine if they are on the right path or not. And if not, make the necessary changes to bring about desired results. This is what?business analytics?is all about.

Understanding the means of analysis

Business analytics?or?business consulting?is the practice of employing methodical means to explore an organization?s data, emphasizing on statistical analysis for a data-driven way of decision making.?Business analytics?is utilized in order to gain insights on what factors affect decisions and how these can be automated and optimized for use alongside business processes. Companies that use data-driven decision-making processes treat data as corporate asset and take advantage of it to gain a competitive edge. In order for business analysis to be successful, data quality is important, as well as skilled analysts with an understanding of technologies, the nature of the business, and the commitment of the organization so that analysis can be streamlined to suit data-driven decision making goals.

Examples of business analysis

In order to further understand the role of analytics in business, examples may be in order. Some of the examples of the uses of analytics in business include: data mining (the exploration of data to zero in on new relationships and patterns), statistical and quantitative analysis (the explanation as to why certain results occurred), multivariate testing (the experimentation to dissect previous decisions), and predictive modeling and analytics (the forecasting of future results). Once the goals of?business analytics?have been determined, the selection of a methodology for an analysis and the acquisition of data to support analysis then ensue. The acquisition of data usually involves extraction from various business systems, cleansing, and then integration into just one repository, like a data mart or data warehouse. Analysis is also usually compared against smaller data sets and the tools used for analyzing data will range depending on the data that needs to be analyzed. When relationships and patterns in data are seen, analysts may ask new questions to further probe the data, changing the process until business goals are met. Predictive models are deployed for scoring data records and then using these scores for optimized real-time decision making within business processes and applications. Analytics may also support more tactical decision making methods as a response to emergencies and in a lot of cases to automate decision making to support real-time actions.

Is?business analytics?for you?

It is for everyone. While different processes may be employed since different data need to be analyzed, all companies will benefit from undergoing certain levels of business analysis for their improvement. Fortunately, more and more consulting services are becoming available these days, making it more convenient to call in the experts and have them help you create the best company there is.
