The Asus ET2410IUTS-B018C ($999.99 list) is a midrange touch screen all-in-one desktop PC. This iteration is a vast improvement over its lackluster older brother, the ET2410-06 ($899.99 list, 2 stars). Asus has made major strides to pack this version with hearty features like a quad-core processor, integrated Wi-Fi, and an HDMI-in port to extend the useful life of the monitor. The result raises the bar for mainstream touch-enabled all-in-one desktops, letting the ET2410IUTS-B018C compare favorably with more expensive systems and thus earn our Editors' Choice award.
Design and Features The ET2410IUTS-B018C is supported by an adjustable pedestal stand on a single pivoting hinge. Although this style of stand works well for a standard monitor, it's a bit too wobbly for use with a touch screen. That said, the solid metal base provides a 25-degree range of motion, and much more stability than you get from the Samsung Series 7 (DP700A3B-A01US) ($1,099 direct, 3.5 stars) or the Sony VAIO VPC-L231FX/W ($999.99 list, 4.5 stars), if less than you get with the Dell Inspiron One 2320 ($1,249.99 direct, 4 stars). The perimeter of the screen is lined with IR sensors that enable the display's optical multitouch technology, which offers a multitouch experience without the added expense of a capacitive touchscreen. IR optical sensing requires the screen to be set deeper into the bezel and tends to be slightly less accurate, but I encountered few problems while using the Asus ET2410IUTS-B018C?I was able to tap, zoom, swipe, and rotate with ease.
With a 1,920-by-1,080 resolution, the 23.6-inch widescreen display looks terrific whether you're browsing the Web or watching a DVD. Blu-ray isn't available in this configuration, but HD lovers aren't left entirely out in the cold: The ET2410IUTS-B018C is equipped with an HDMI input that lets you connect your own Blu-ray player or cable box to enjoy HD content. The pedestal stand can be removed and replaced with a VESA mount if you'd prefer the all-in-one to reside on the wall; this will both fix the wobbling problem and let you set up the desktop more like a television.
The ET2410IUTS-B018C has decent audio as well, with stereo speakers and simulated surround sound, thanks to DTS Surround Sound UltraPC and Asus SonicMaster technology. These baked-in enhancements do enhance the listening experience, but the sound lacks bass and can get tinny at high volumes.
The bundled wireless chiclet-style keyboard is large enough to provide a comfortable typing experience whether you're sitting at a desk or reclining on the couch. The mouse, on the other hand, is a little small, falling somewhere between a full-size mouse and a travel mouse. It's a shame, because the matte-black rubber coating across the top surface is a nice touch, and the buttons are responsive and quiet.
On the left side of the all-in-one you'll find a panel that opens to reveal a wealth of ports: two USB 3.0 ports, a combination eSATA/USB 2.0 port, a 3-in-1 card reader (SD/SDHC/MMC), and headphone and microphone jacks. On the back of the PC you'll find three USB 2.0 ports, a Gigabit Ethernet jack, and a case lock slot. One of those USB ports will be occupied by a receiver for the included wireless keyboard and mouse, reducing the total number of available USB ports to four. An HDMI output is available for connecting a second monitor or HDTV, but the real treat is the inclusion of HDMI and VGA inputs, which extend the life of the all-in-one by making it workable as a monitor or television long after its internal components are out of date.
On the right side of the chassis you'll find a dual-layer DVD?RW drive, though we would prefer a Blu-ray drive to better take advantage of the 1,920-by-1,080 display. Inside the chassis, the ET2410IUTS-B018C is equipped with a fast, spacious 1TB, 7,200rpm hard drive; and Asus extends this further with a trial version of Asus WebStorage. This lets you offload storage to the cloud; you get 2GB of free storage space for a year, and unlimited space is available for a modest subscription fee (from $8.99 for three months to $54.99 for two years). Integrated 802.11n Wi-Fi means you won't have to snake an ugly Ethernet cable from a router across the room, a benefit that was noticeably lacking in the Asus ET2410-06.
On the hard drive, you'll find a few programs preinstalled, but nothing more egregious than a Bing toolbar for Internet Explorer. The ET2410IUTS-B018C comes with the Windows TouchPack, Microsoft Office Starter 2010, a 30-day trial of Trend Micro Titanium, and several Asus programs, such as Asus Vibe Fun Center, Asus Cam, Asus Cinema, Asus Memo, Asus Paint in addition to Asus WebStorage.
Performance
The ET2410IUTS-B018C offers quad-core processing via its 2.9GHz Intel Core i5-2310 processor, which is paired with 6GB of DDR3 RAM. This combination resulted in strong performance in all of our processor-intensive tests. In PCMark 7, the all-in-one bested top competitors, scoring 2,992 as compared with top-rated systems like the Dell Inspiron One 2320 (2,718), Samsung Series 7 (2,753), and the Editors' Choice Sony VAIO VPC-L231FX/W (2,167). It also surpassed competitors in CineBench R11.5, scoring 4.7, ahead of the 4.47 we saw from the HP TouchSmart 610-1150y ($1,199.99 list, 4.5 stars) and the 4.13 of the long-standing leader of the all-in-one category, the Apple iMac 21.5-inch (Thunderbolt) ($1,199 list, 4.5 stars).
The ET2410IUTS-B018C also produced strong scores in our multimedia tests. It completed our Photoshop CS5 test in 3 minutes 43 seconds; by comparison, the HP 610-1150y and the Dell Inspiron One were both slightly slower (3:56 and 3:38, respectively). The Asus also led the category in our Handbrake video conversion test, finishing in 1 minute 24 seconds, ahead of both the TouchSmart 610-1150y and Inspiron One 2320 (both 1:29).
With only the CPU's integrated graphics, the ET2410IUTS-B018C lacks the graphics capability necessary for serious gaming. In Crysis the Asus only managed 13 frames per second (fps) on low resolution and detail settings. The lack of DirectX 11 support also meant that it was unable to run either 3DMark 11 or Lost Planet 2. It should be noted, however, that the only all-in-ones able to run these tests have used discrete graphics, such as the Nvidia-equipped Dell Inspiron One 2320. Most manufacturers forgo discrete graphics in all-in-one systems, thereby reducing the bulk of the components to fit into the monitor chassis. You'll be able to play less demanding games, like Portal and World of Warcraft, but not the GPU-intensive stuff.
The Asus ET2410IUTS-B018C is a well-equipped all-in-one desktop, and it certainly fixes most of the problems that weighed down the Asus ET2410-06 by adding Wi-Fi, a more powerful processor, and more RAM. The Asus ET2410IUTS-B018C is a solid performer and a good value, outpacing the former champ, the Sony VAIO VPC-L231FX/W to become the new Editors' Choice in the mainstream all-in-one category.
