Jamie Dupree's Washington Insider: Congress moves highway, student loan bills

By Jamie Dupree

Before leaving town on a July 4th break, the House and Senate on Friday are expected to approve major highway and student loan interest rate measures, demonstrating again that serious lawmaking can take place even at a time when both parties accuse the other of rank partisanship and gridlock.

The highway bill has been several years in the making, as Congress has relied on almost two dozen short term extensions of a couple of months each.

The student loan plan will prevent interest rates on newly subsidized loans from doubling on July 1.

Also included in this bill are a number of other legislative items, like a flood insurance program re-authorization that needed action by this weekend as well and some legislation dealing with sport fishing and more.

I thought I would let you thumb through the bills that have been combined by just looking at the Table of Contents, to give you a better idea on what is in this measure.

Pick something out and leave a comment. ?Final language of highway bill/student loan deal can be seen at?? - a full explanation is at?
