Mental illness subject of event at Cedar Mill library | OregonLive.com

Helen Cochran Coffey knows the effect mental illness has on families. The Cedar Mill resident's daughter committed suicide in 2009 after suffering from an undiagnosed borderline personality disorder. Coffey wrote about her family's experience in a book published in May, and she's bringing her story to the Cedar Mill Community Library.

The program will begin at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday with presentations from several local groups that provide services to people with mental illness and their families. Coffey will talk about her book, "Don't Let Anyone Know: A Story About Mental Illness -- The World Viewed Only the Silhouette!," and answer questions. The event is expected to last about 90 minutes.

"Every 14.2 minutes someone in America dies by suicide," Coffey said. "I wrote the book because I think there needs to be more conversation about mental health services and what's available." Coffey said she tells her daughter's story every opportunity she gets "hoping that someone will hear and seek help, and someone will hear and reach out to help someone else."

Mental health organizations presenting include ASHA International (myasha.org), NAMI of Washington County (namiwash.org) and Oregon Partnership's Crisis Line Program (linesforlife.org).

The Cedar Mill Community Library is at 12505 N.W. Cornell Road. Information: 503-644-0043 or http://library.cedarmill.org/.
